MP Helps Claro Enterprises Celebrate 20th Anniversary

Phil Willis MP (LibDem, Harrogate & Knaresborough) will be helping local sheltered workshop Claro Enterprises celebrate its 20th Anniversay on Friday 12 June.

"I am delighted to have been invited to this event" said Phil Willis. "Claro Enterprises have been an important part of the community for 20 years providing an invaluable service to people suffering from mental ill health.

Carers at Breaking Point - Local MP calls for recognition for Harrogate & Knaresborough’s carers

Phil Willis MP is backing this year’s Carers Week (8-14 June) in support of Harrogate & Knaresborough’s carers, who are among the six million people in the UK who provide unpaid care for a loved one who is ill, frail or disabled.

Phil Willis’s support comes as new research reveals that almost three-quarters (74%) of carers have reached breaking point due to the pressures of their role. The results show that the strain of caring is causing some carers such extreme levels of stress and depression that they are suffering breakdowns and, in some cases, even attempting suicide.

'This is a moral victory' says MP

“I am delighted that at last the House of Commons has demonstrated its power over the Government" said Phil Willis MP (LibDem, Harrogate & Knaresborough) following the Government's defeat over its policy of restricting the numbers of former Gurkha soldiers who can settle in this country.

"This is a moral victory of huge importance and the Prime Minster must act immediately to carry out the will of Parliament” he added.

Stand Up To Hatred

Phil Willis MP has shown his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by signing a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to honour those who perished in the Holocaust.

As in previous years, Holocaust Educational Trust placed the Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to give MPs the opportunity to pledge that they will uphold the memory of the Holocaust and oppose hatred today.

MP Calls for Help for Blind and Partially Sighted Constituents

“It is time that people with serious sight loss should be able to claim the higher rates of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)” says Phil Willis MP (LibDem, Harrogate & Knaresborough).

Phil Willis is pressing the Government to change its policy to allow blind and partially sighted people to claim the higher levels of Disability Living Allowance

“Blind and partially sighted people face some of the biggest obstacles to independent mobility” he added “It is therefore nonsense that they should not be able to claim the DLA which is available to other people.

MP Calls for Clearer Information on Energy Bills

Phil Willis MP (LibDem, Harrogate & Knaresborough) is calling on the government to require energy companies to publish information on bills showing whether consumers are on the cheapest tariff offered by their supplier

“It is estimated1 that 5.5 million households are now in fuel poverty, spending more that 10% of their income on maintaining an adequate level of heating” said Phil Willis.

“There are so many different tariffs it can be difficult to know whether you could be on a better deal” added the MP.

MP Blasts ITV Decision

“This is a bitter blow not just for Leeds but for the whole county of Yorkshire” said Phil Willis MP (Lib Dem, Harrogate & Knaresborough) commenting on the closure of ITV's Kirkstall studio in Leeds.

Phil Willis has joined other MPs from across the region in condemning the decision and expressing fears for the quality of future programming.
